I am aware that it’s way trite of me to say The Beatles are the greatest. It’s a little like being a Yankee fan or something, I admit... It's not an original concept. But it’s my truth. They are the reason I do what I do in life. I only hope I don’t get anyone so fired up to the point Yachtsman has to go on a maniacal rant on how the Beatles dissed Jesus, suck at music, and Whitesnake or whoever is the greatest.
What team or athlete is the “Beatles of Sports?” The Greatest?
It’s a tough question, seeing as there are so many different sports. Give me your opinions. Comment on my pile of crap. I have written maybe 4 blogs on here and nobody has ever commented. (which is probably a testament either to my immovable genius or self-involved tedium). So tell me sports people:
What athletes have transcended being just an athlete? Who has changed their sport and dominated the world? Maybe it’s Jordan, or Gretzky or Jamie Mueller, I dunno…I want to read your opinions! Who is the Greatest?
Here, I’ll get the ball rolling…
Sorry, but the dude totally reminds me of the Beatles. Maybe because it was the 60’s and shit, or because of his personality with the media, or because he was knocked down for his views (a la Lennon’s “Jesus” statement) and got back up. Ali was also WORLD FAMOUS to Beatle-esque levels… all of that totally goes into play here. But like the Beatles’ amazing sense of melody, what truly made Ali great was simple beauty. The man was like a ballet dancer. His butterfly---bee thing was just as true as the melody to “Yesterday” or “Blackbird”. He was a fucking beautiful artist AND he kicked the shit out of people. Sports, like dancing, like music, have an aesthetic quality that can go beyond winning and losing. I can watch people play and lose and just be amazed at their skill, their style and grace. (ahem Ryan Miller hello?) I once made this comparison between sports and the arts in the presence of ballet dancers at a party in Brooklyn about 10 years ago. 'Twas not a good idea... they almost kicked me out, but I don’t care. Sports is an art. Sports is beauty, and Muhammad Ali is the greatest.
So bring it on, guys. In honor of The Beatles, give me YOUR "greatest" in sports.
Is this stupid? Probably.
It’s my Beatles take.
